"Christmas (Infant Please Come Habitation)" is a rock song originally sung by Darlene Beloved and included on the 1963 seasonal compilation album, A Christmas Gift for Yous from Phil Spector. The song was written past Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Phil Spector.

Upon release, the vocal did non observe commercial success but in later years, information technology has gone on to go a Christmas standard. Information technology charted for the starting time time on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018 and has since peaked at number sixteen. It has also peaked at number seven on the Holiday 100 chart. The vocal has also been covered many times; most notably by Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé and U2.

Background and release [edit]

Love was given a demo of the song over the telephone and went on to record the song.[i] The song was released equally a single in 1963.[two] and in 1964 (Philles 10-125).[3] Upon release, the vocal was non a huge success but it has gone on to go a Christmas standard.[4]

In 1963, Phil Spector the producer found that the song was strong enough to warrant a non-seasonal version and wrote a version "Johnny (Infant Delight Come up Habitation)" which Love too performed.[four] This version was released to the public in 1976 every bit the final runway on the Spector compilation album, Rare Masters Vol. two.[4]

Nautical chart performance [edit]

Despite non charting on release, the song has since constitute commercial success in afterward years. The song charted on the Billboard Holiday 100 nautical chart at number 99 on the week catastrophe December 13, 2014,[v] reaching a superlative position of number seven, seven years subsequently (on the calendar week ending December 4, 2021).[half-dozen] On the week ending Dec 29, 2018, the rails entered the principal Billboard Hot 100 chart for the offset time at number 50,[7] and attained an all-time summit position of number 17 on the calendar week catastrophe December xi, 2021 (upon its tertiary chart re-entry).[eight] On the official UK Singles Nautical chart, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" made its first appearance on the week of 5 January 2017 at number 74. It entered the same chart over again one year later at No. 77, and once again on the calendar week of xx December 2018 at No. 80, eventually reaching its overall chart peak to date of No. 22 ii weeks later.[nine]

Live performances [edit]

Beginning in 1986 and continuing for 29 years, Darlene Love performed the song annually on the final new episode before Christmas of Late Night with David Letterman (NBC, 1986–92) and Late Bear witness with David Letterman (CBS, 1993–2014), 28 times in all. The exception was in 2007, when Love was unable to perform due to the Writers' Strike and a repeat of her 2006 functioning was shown instead.[10] She performed the song with Paul Shaffer and the show's house band (The World's Most Dangerous Band at NBC, the CBS Orchestra at CBS).[eleven] Love also performed the song on December 24, 2013 in front of traders at the New York Stock Substitution as the market airtight for the day. Showtime in 2015, the tradition of Love'due south annual performance of the song moved to The View (ABC, 2015–nowadays), where it has continued during its last edition before Christmas in the years since.[12]

In Dec 2010, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Christmas (Infant Please Come Habitation)" beginning on its list of The Greatest Rock and Coil Christmas Songs, noting that "nobody can match Love's emotion and sheer vocal ability." The song has also been used in several movies.[xiv]

"Christmas (Baby Please Come up Home)" was not widely recognized after its initial release just has gone on to be covered many times past different artists over the years. Ane of the earliest cover version was past The Serenity Jungle, for the 1968 anthology The Story Of Snoopy's Christmas.[15]

The song was covered past Irish rock ring U2 in 1987 during a sound cheque in Glasgow, Scotland during their Joshua Tree Tour.[xvi] It was officially released on the compilation A Very Special Christmas the same year and on the anthology Unreleased & Rare in the digital box setThe Consummate U2 in 2004.[17]

In 1994, Mariah Carey recorded a version and included it on her album Merry Christmas.[eighteen] Carey'south version reached number 59 on Billboard'due south Hot Digital Songs chart in 2011 and number 20 on the U.s. Holiday 100; the latter existence the second highest position for the song on the chart after the original.[19] She first performed her version in 2008 at The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live.[20] The vocal was also added to her setlist for her All I Want for Christmas Is You: A Night of Joy and Festivity concert residency.[21] In 2021, Carey covered the song again for her Christmas special, Mariah's Christmas: The Magic Continues.[22]

In 2011, Michael Bublé covered the song for his anthology, Christmas.[23] In 2021, he performed the song live with Hannah Waddingham on his Christmas in the City NBC special celebrating the 10th ceremony of his Christmas album.[24]

In 2021 Keke Palmer and the cast of Sing ii also covered the song for a 2021 Christmas commercial from Comcast'south Xfinity and as a bonus track from the original motion picture soundtrack of the same name.[25] Palmer and Tori Kelly performed the vocal live on The Vocalization season 21 finale with the height 13 acts.[26] The song has besides been covered by Cher,[27] Foo Fighters,[28] Joey Ramone,[29] Jon Bon Jovi,[thirty] Jonathan Jackson,[31] Idina Menzel,[32] Little Mix,[33] and Noah Cyrus.[34]

Beloved herself has noted that her 2 favourite covers of the vocal are Mariah Carey'south, considering "her's is so much like the original [...] with her great voice", and U2's, "considering information technology doesn't sound like "Christmas (Baby)" and they had all three background vocals on it".[35]
